Friday night was a good night for one local team - the Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats - while it was a bad night for the rest of the local teams playing.

The Bobcats snapped a 13 game losing streak dating back to the 2004 season by defeating Towns County 12-8. Our Lady of Mercy started early with Jarrell Bankhead running for a seven yard touchdown in the first quarter and quarterback William Pearl running on a one yard quarterback keeper for the second touchdown. A missed extra point and a missed two point conversion made it 12-0 for the Bobcats and it appeared the score would hold going into the half but the Indians recovered a fumble after an Our Lady of Mercy interception and connected on a 55 yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left in the half.

The Bobcats hung on for the win, not allowing another point to be scored on them in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. They only gave up 13 rushing yards in the second half and 57 rushing yards total. The Indians passed for a total of 76 yards in the loss. Bankhead rushed for 100 yards and Brett Thomas added 74 yards of his own as the Bobcats had a total of 249 yards rushing on the night. On defense, Will Simmons led the way with 12 total tackles, while Christian Brow added 10. Patrick Silloway had a fumble recovery and Thomas and Desmond Curry each had an interception.

The Bobcats (1-2) will play at Mt. Zion, Carroll (0-4) on Friday.

And that is where the good news stops. The rest of the local teams played well in their games but fell short in their attempts at picking up region wins.

Whitewater was within seven points of Creekside in the fourth quarter but soon found themselves down by 21 after giving up two big plays. They lost to the Seminoles 33-12. Tavoris Dixon had a big night for the Wildcats, rushing for 146 yards on the night. Jerrod Richardson caught a touchdown pass from Jay Bright on the first drive of the evening and Jordan Cooper kicked two field goals to account for the rest of Whitewater’s points on the night. Defensively, the team was led by Jonathan Ashley, Brice Thomas, Jonah Jaurigue, Ryan Johnson and Ryan Hidalgo.

Whitewater (2-2 overall, 1-1 region) will host Westlake (2-2 overall, 2-0 region) on Friday.

The Starr’s Mill Panthers found themselves in a shootout of sorts with Westlake and lost 38-31. The Panthers had an explosive night on offense with 194 yards passing for two touchdowns and 239 yards rushing for two touchdowns.Quarterback Robby Davis was at the center of it all with 171 yards rushing and two touchdowns and touchdown passes thrown to Dante Cheek and Parker duPont.
Eric Pitts and Keenan Penson also had a good night catching the ball.

“Robby is a competitor and a performance like the one last Friday doesn’t surprise me,” said Coach Mike Earwood.

The offense wasn’t enough though as Westlake rushed for 194 yards and four touchdowns and passed for 216 yards and one touchdown. Chris Suddeth led the Panther defense with 13 tackles.
The loss puts Starr’s Mill’s region record at 0-2. They will host Banneker (1-2 overall, 1-0 region) on Friday.

Fayette County also had a good night offensively, rushing for 315 yards in a 29-22 loss to Woodward Academy. Quarterback Brandon Boykin rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown and fullback Matt Daniels added 129 yards and two touchdowns. The defense was led by 11 tackles from Audy Whittington, while Daniels added nine tackles and Boykin chipped in eight.
Fayette County (1-3 overall, 0-2 region) plays at Northgate (1-2 overall, 0-1 region) on Friday.

The McIntosh Chiefs led Banneker 9-6 at the half and found themselves tied at 16 at the end of regulation. Mason Davis and Qua Mack had touchdowns for the Chiefs while Eric Willanzheimer had his second safety in as many weeks. McIntosh’s overtime drive was stopped on an interception and Banneker scored on their possession to win 23-16.
It was their fifth turnover of the game and Coach Dwight Jones felt the results could’ve been different without the turnovers.
McIntosh has a bye week this week.

Landmark Christian and Sandy Creek, both off last week, return to the gridiron this Friday.
The War Eagles (2-1) will host Bremen (2-2), while Sandy Creek (3-0) hosts their first region opponent of the season, Villa Rica (2-1).
