Oct. 3 marks the end of the regular season for most of the local softball teams and region tournaments are set to begin the week after. There are precious few games to move up in the region standings and if moving up isn’t possible, coaches at least want to see their team playing their best ball as they enter the post season.

Things are going well for Fayette County. After a 3-0 loss to McIntosh last Monday in a game that didn’t count in the region standings, the Lady Tigers defeated Creekside 16-0 and Pike County 10-0 before a 1-0 region loss to Starr’s Mill last Thursday. Chasity Welch had a big week for Fayette County, going 3-for-3 with three RBI against Creekside, while Gillian Hogue, Lauren Dobler and Whitney Carter also drove in runs. Britt Hammel-Cobb threw a no hitter and struck out six of the 10 batters she faced.

In the Pike County game, Welch went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Caroline Teubl went 4-for-5 with three RBI. Hammel-Cobb drove in two runs, while Dobler added one and Minnie Holnes added another. Teubl picked up the win, giving up four hits and striking out six. Though Fayette County did not score against Starr’s Mill, Welch had both hits for the Lady Tigers and Hammel-Cobb struck out five batters while giving up four hits.

Fayette County (3-3 in the region) hosted Banneker yesterday after the paper went to press and will host Pike County today at 5 p.m. before their final game of the season next Tuesday at McIntosh at 5 p.m.

McIntosh finally got their game with Woodward Academy in last Thursday, after several cancellations. The Lady Chiefs made the most of it, winning 10-0 and getting big hits from Erin Justice with a three run home run and Amelia Beach, Bre Elder, Jessica Conaway and Shannon Reno with two hits each. McIntosh (5-1 in the region) had a big region match at Starr’s Mill yesterday after the paper went to press and will play in the Brookwood Invitational this Wednesday-Saturday.

Starr’s Mill remained undefeated in region 2-AAAA (6-0) by defeating Westlake 16-0 before handing Fayette County a 1-0 loss. In the Westlake game, Peurifoy struck out 11 batters, while Ashley Clontz, Lauren Marchman, Karlie Bureau and Kayla Deis all had big hits. After Tuesday’s game with McIntosh, Starr’s Mill is scheduled to play at Woodstock on Thursday and will close the season with a home game against Northgate (6-0) next Tuesday at 6 p.m.The Lady Vikings are currently ranked 10th in AAAA in a GaSports.com coaches poll.

Whitewater is 4-3 in the region with one remaining region game on their schedule, a home game against Westlake next Tuesday. The three region losses that the Lady Wildcats have on their record are all 1-0 losses. Starr’s Mill and Northgate remain undefeated in the region and McIntosh only has a loss to Northgate marring their region record. Needless to say, Whitewater, which will likely be seeded fourth, should be a very dangerous team in the region tournament.

In 6-AAA, Sandy Creek faced Haralson County last Thursday and lost 3-1. Kayla Folds pitched for Sandy Creek and had nine strikeouts. Kayla Awbrey had two hits and scored the lone run for the Lady Patriots. Sandy Creek (2-1 in the region) hosted Cass yesterday and will face Carrollton tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

In 5-A, Landmark Christian is currently in second place with a 6-1 record. The Lady War Eagles have a big week this week. They played at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, currently first in the region, yesterday and will host Whitefield Academy tomorrow. Our Lady of Mercy faces both those teams this week as well. They played at Whitefield Academy yesterday and will host Eagle’s Landing Christian tomorrow. The Lady Chargers are currently ranked number one in Class A in a GaSports.com coaches poll.
