Shannon P. Calahan has been promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Calahan is the principal regional emergency preparedness liaison officer assigned to Headquarters 81st Regional Readiness Command at Birmingham, Ala. The colonel has served in the military for 24 years. Calahan, a native of Lawrence, Kan., is the daughter of Hiram C. Brown of Birmingham, Mich., and Jean L. Newman of Phoenix, Ariz. Her husband, Philip, is the son of Martha Calahan of Nacogdoches, Texas. The colonel, her husband and their three children currently reside in Tyrone, Ga.

• The following Fayette County residents have earned degrees from Columbus State University: Ashley E. Thames, of Brooks, graduated Summa Cum Laude (3.8-40 GPA) with a bachelor’s degree in art education; Ashley Blanchard Price, of Fayetteville, with a master’s degree in secondary education; Lyndsey M. Rehnstrom, of Peachtree City, Summa Cum Laude (3.8-40 GPA) with a bachelor’s degree in music education; Jun Abner Salatandre, of Peachtree City, with a bachelor’s degree in psychology; and Michael Blake Claman, of Peachtree City, with a master’s degree in justice administration.

Patrick Christopher Farrell graduated on August 4, 2006 from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in the co-op plan. He is currently employed with the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Cartersville, Ga. Farrell is a 2001 graduate of McIntosh High School and is the son of Richard and Martha Farrell of Peachtree City.

• University of Georgia student Brian Wilson, of Fayetteville, was among the nine future superintendents who were awarded college scholarships for the 2006-2007 school year from the Georgia State Golf Foundation (GSGF), the charitable affiliate of the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA). The recipients were honored at a luncheon June 9 at the Cherokee Town & Country Club in Atlanta. Georgia’s most promising future superintendents are supported by the GSGF, through the Monty Moncrief Memorial Scholarship Program. The Moncrief Scholarships honor deserving students in the field of agronomy and turf management at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) and the University of Georgia (UGA). Six students from ABAC and three from UGA received scholarships for the 2006-2007 school year. This program is also supported by the Georgia Golf Environmental Foundation, the charitable affiliate of the Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association. The program is in its 30th year and has granted more than $245,000 to more than 200 Moncrief Scholars. The scholarship is named in memory of Moncrief, a former Southeastern Green Section Director for the United States Golf Association. Scholars are nominated by their faculty advisors and selected based on academic achievement, character and financial need.

• Captain Matthew B. Chitty has assumed command of Company D, 3-8 Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division on September 6 at Ft. Hood, Texas. Capt. Chitty is the son of LTC (Ret.) Dan and Kathy Chitty of Fayetteville. Capt. Chitty is a 1996 graduate of Fayette County High School and a 2000 graduate of North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, Ga. where he was a Distinguished Military Graduate. Chitty attained the rank of Eagle Scout from Troop 76 in Fayetteville. His unit is currently undergoing preparation for deployment to Kuwait/Iraq in October.

• Franciscan University of Steubenville recently honored student Aaron Cunningham from Fayetteville, Ga., with an Outstanding Junior Class Award for exceptional academic work. To receive a class award, students must have a GPA of 3.6 or higher and then be selected by a panel of faculty. Located in Southeastern Ohio, Franciscan University of Steubenville offers challenging academics and a vibrant Catholic spirituality that attracts students from 50 states and many countries.

Christopher R. Judy, a 2003 graduate of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, Ga., graduated from United States Marine Corps basic training at Parris Island, S.C. He has completed the following training: Marine Combat School and Marine School of Infantry, Camp Geiger, N.C.; Recon Indoctrination Program, Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas; Amphibious Reconnaissance School, Coronado Island, Cali.; Airborne School, Ft. Benning, Columbus, Ga.; S.E.R.E. School, North Island Naval Air Station, Coronado Island, Cali.; Marine Combatant Dive School, Panama City Beach, Fla. Lance Corporal Judy received his Naval Marine Parachuist Insignia (gold wings) during pre-deployment training, Ft. Harrison, Helena, Mont. and recently completed pre-deployment training at Camp Pendleton, Cali. and Twenty Nine Palms, Cali. He will be deployed with the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Cali. in September 2006.
