Union City Council Sept. 19 approved the bid process to improve the first five streets identified in the 2006 Street and Road Improvement Bond Series. Construction should begin in the next three months.

The five streets were slated as the first improvements due to a decreased requirement for engineering and because they already meet Union City codes. Targeted streets include portions of Lancaster Lane, Forest Lane, Westbrook Place, Virginia Avenue and Oakley Road. All the projects will consist of repair and overlay of existing pavement.

The .01-mile Lancaster Lane project will cover the area from Shannon Parkway to Londonderry Way. The Forest Lane project, also .01-mile, runs from Lester Road to the end of Forest Lane. The Westbrook project extends for one-half mile from Clayborn Street to Gresham Street. The Virginia Avenue improvement includes the .01-mile section from Roosevelt Highway to the end of the street. Rounding out the list, the Oakley Road project extends one-half mile from Shannon Boulevard to Mall Boulevard.
