• Berry’s Nicole Degner, a Peachtree City resident, won the Friendship Invitational to help lead the Vikings to a third place finish at the meet. The No. 24 Vikings finished third from a 15-team field that included four nationally-ranked teams.

“Nicole ran a great race,” said Berry coach Paul Deaton. “She really took over the race over the final mile. It was fun to watch.”

Degner, a McIntosh graduate, finished the five-kilometer race in a time of 18:23 to out-pace the field by almost 19 seconds.

• Peachtree City’s Kourtney Kowal, 14, a freshman at Starr’s Mill High School, won two big trophies this month. She won the Girls 16 singles title at The Serve for Citizen tournament, Sept. 16 at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. She had four staright wins and defeated Starr’s Mill junior Caroline Smith in straight sets for the title. Over Labor Day weekend, she placed fourth in 16 singles in the Labor Day Southern/Designated Tournament in Baton Rouge, La. Kowal was seeded ninth and had wins over third seeded rachel Hart of Alpharetta, Ga. and fifth seeded Guinn Garcia of Knoxville, Tenn.
