Conwill to speak at St. Gabriel’s fall missionTue, 09/19/2006 - 3:58pm

The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel will conduct its annual fall mission with the Rev. Dr. Giles Conwell the guest presider. The theme of the three evening event will be, “Who is this Jesus?” The mission event will be Monday, Oct. 2 through Wednesday, Oct. 4 and will begin each evening at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of each session and will be sponsored by various groups within the Catholic parish. Conwill, ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1973, is currently an associate professor of history at Morehouse College. He holds a degree from Emory University in African-American history and cultural anthropology. His master’s of divinity degree is from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary and he holds several degrees from the University of San Diego. The winner of a nationwide interdenominational sermon-writing contest, Conwill also preaches African-American Catholic revivals throughout the nation including such places as Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Little Rock, and his hometown of Louisville. He also had the distinct honor of preaching at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York during Black History Month. The mission on Monday and Tuesday will consist of a welcome and talk by Rev. Conwill on the topic of “Who is this Jesus?” and on Wednesday he will celebrate and speak at a Mass for the congregation. Those interested in receiving a preview of the speaker may do so at any of the St. Gabriel weekend Masses prior to the beginning of the mission. Conwill will be the homilist at the regular Saturday Vigil Mass at 5:30 p.m. and again Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. as well as the Life Teen Mass Sunday at 5 p.m. The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel is on Antioch Road just south of the intersection of Highway 92 South and Antioch. The parish of 650 families is in the final building stages of its permanent sanctuary located on the same site, scheduled to be dedicated Nov. 11.
