Former county residents help out their college football teams in week three

The third week of the college football season was called “Separation Saturday,” but none of the formerly local players took part in any of the day’s premier match-ups. Many did represent their schools on Saturday though. Here’s a rundown of how they did.

• Deante Battle, a Starr’s Mill graduate, had three solo tackles, two assists, one interception returned for 31 yards and two pass break-ups for Northwestern University in the team’s 14-6 win over Eastern Michigan.

• Larry Beard, a Sandy Creek graduate playing for Georgia Southern, had one assisted tackle in Georgia Southern’s 38-21 win over Coastal Carolina.

• Darrell Burston, a Starr’s Mill graduate, started at left end for Florida State University in their 27-20 loss to Clemson.

• Charles Castleberry, a McIntosh graduate at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, got some playing time in the team’s 28-7 loss to SW Minnesota State.

• John Deraney, a Starr’s Mill graduate, kicked a 54 yard field goal and two extra points for NC State in their 37-17 loss to Southern Miss. He also had five punts for 205 yards with a long of 54 and three kickoffs for 189 yards.

• Johnny Edwards, a Starr’s Mill graduate, got some playing time on defense in Wake Forest’s 24-13 win over UConn.

• Andrew Gardner, a Sandy Creek graduate, started at left tackle for Georgia Tech in their 35-20 win over Troy.

• Ryan Gloer, a Starr’s Mill graduate, had two solo tackles and one assist for Shorter College in the team’s 54-0 win over LaGrange College.
• Chris James, a Starr’s Mill graduate attending Western Kentucky University, kicked four extra points in Western Kentucky’s 28-21 win over Chattanooga.

• Kenneth James, a Starr’s mill graduate, had one assisted tackle for Shorter College in the team’s 54-0 win over LaGrange College.

• Calvin Johnson, a Sandy Creek graduate playing for Georgia Tech, had two catches for 9 yards in the Yellow Jackets 35-20 win over Troy.

• Demetric McDonald, a Sandy Creek graduate, had one solo tackle and two assists for Shorter College in their 54-0 win over LaGrange College.

• Bernard Michel, an Our Lady of Mercy graduate, had some playing time for Shorter College in their 54-0 win over LaGrange College.

• Jamael Owens, a McIntosh graduate playing for LaGrange College, got some playing time in their 54-0 loss to Shorter College.

• Hart Pearson, a Fayette County graduate, had three punts for 113 yards with a long of 39 for Charleston Southern University in their 20-17 win over Wingate.

• Kip Rossi, a Fayette County graduate got some playing time for LaGrange College in their 54-0 loss to Shorter College.

• Andy Smith, a Starr’s Mill graduate, started at right guard for the University of Memphis and had one tackle in their 35-20 loss to East Carolina University.

• Riley Swanson, a Sandy Creek graduate, had one solo tackle, two assists and a fumble recovery for the Wake Forest defense in their 24-13 win over UConn.
