Lawsuit now stumbling block for new reservoirThu, 09/14/2006 - 4:11pm

Permits granted for Lake McIntosh on Line Creek Fayette County officials have received all necessary permits to build the Lake McIntosh reservoir along Line Creek in Peachtree City, County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn said Tuesday night. But the project is still stuck in neutral because the reservoir is trapped in the “water wars” lawsuit between Georgia, Florida and Alabama, Dunn noted. The reservoir will provide up to 8 million gallons a day, enough water to support more than 56,000 additional Fayette residents, according to county data. The county has a capacity of producing 20.3 million gallons a day on its own to support a population of up to 142,960, meaning that the addition of Lake McIntosh will support more than 200,000 people living in Fayette. The county is estimating that lake construction could be completed within two years. The cost is estimated at $8.2 million with funds coming from revenue bonds and loans from the Georgia Environmental Financing Authority. The project has been under discussion since at least the mid-1970s and the county already has purchased all necessary land in conjunction with the project. The dam for the lake will be located near the TDK Boulevard Extension, specifically near the bridge that will link Peachtree City with Coweta County. The land-locked parcel owned by Pathway Communities off the TDK extension is also immediately adjacent to the eventual lake location, officials said. Lake McIntosh will consist of 650 acres, compared to the 235 acres at Lake Kedron, 250 acres at Lake Peachtree and 790 acres at Lake Horton on the south end of the unincorporated county. Much of the land for Lake McIntosh is actually in Coweta County, Dunn noted Tuesday night at a meeting in Peachtree City. login to post comments |
