A group of Fayette elementary teachers got an up close and personal look at the inner workings of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) during a recent visit to the Big Apple.

Nance Hudson, Braelinn, Heidi Johnson, Crabapple Lane, Connie Wesolowski, East Fayette, Mary Lou Goehring, North Fayette, Jill Kirkland, Sara Harp Minter and Susan Mills, Sara Harp Minter, participated in the five-day NYSE workshop aimed at helping educators teach their students about the stock market and its role in the global economy.

Participants in the program include elementary school, middle school, high school and college educators from across the country. The teachers hear from NYSE Group staff and industry professionals and engage in hands on activities including visits to the trading floor.

Topics covered in the workshop include the NYSE Group Markets, the Hybrid Market, the roles of market professionals, technology, Market and Corporate Governance, Regulation and Surveillance. Teachers are provided support materials to assist in relaying this information back to their students.

“These programs are valuable to both educators and students and are part of the NYSE Group's grass roots approach to bringing information about the stock market to classroom curricula,” said Murray Teitelbaum, director of education at the NYSE.

At the end of the first day of the workshop, Braelinn’s Nance Hudson was selected as the teacher who had the privilege of ringing the opening bell on August 15. She was the winner of a drawing that included the names of all teachers participating in the workshop.
