Former area athletes playing well on the college gridiron

The second week of the college football season didn’t have as many big games as the first week for players who formerly played football in Fayette County, but the collegiate athletes continued to represent their school and their hometowns well.

• Dante Allen, a Starr’s Mill graudate at The Citadel, had one catch for 14 yards in their 38-35 loss to Charleston Southern.

• Deante Battle, a Starr’s Mill graduate, had five solo tackles for Northwestern University in the team’s 34-17 loss to the University of New Hampshire.

• Larry Beard, a Sandy Creek graduate playing for Georgia Southern, had two solo tackles, two assists and one tackle for a loss of three yeards in the Eagle’s 17-13 loss to Central Connecticut State.

• Darrell Burston, a Starr’s Mill graduate, started at right end for Florida State University in their 24-17 win over Troy.

• Charles Castleberry, a McIntosh graduate at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, rushed for 12 yards in the team’s 66-6 loss to the University of South Dakota.

• John Deraney, a Starr’s Mill graduate, kicked for a field goal and two extra points for NC State in their 20-17 loss to Akron. He also had seven punts for 261 yards with a long of 42 and four kickoffs for 263 yards and two touchbacks.

• Jason Earwood, a Starr’s Mill graduate, had one solo tackle. three assists and half a tackle for a loss in Georgia Southern’s 17-13 loss to Central Connecticut State.

• Johnny Edwards, a Starr’s Mill graduate, got some playing time on defense in Wake Forest’s 14-13 win over Duke.

• Andrew Gardner, a Sandy Creek graduate, started at left tackle for Georgia Tech in their 38-6 win over Samford.

• Gerren Griffin, a Sandy Creek graduate, got some playing time in James Madison’s 21-10 loss to Appalachian State.

• Josh Haney, a Sandy Creek graduate, got some playing time at wide receiver for The Citadel in their 38-35 loss to Charleston Southern Unviersity.

• Chris James, a Starr’s Mill graduate attending Western Kentucky University, kicked three extra points but missed two field goal ((49, 46 yards) in Western Kentucky’s 26-21 loss to Eastern Kentucky.

• Calvin Johnson, a Sandy Creek graduate playing for Georgia Tech, had four catches for 26 yards and two touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets 38-6 win over Samford.

• Miles King, a Landmark Christian School graudate, had one catch for two yards for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in their 38-6 win over Samford.

• Alex Mortensen, a Landmark Christian School graduate, threw one pass for four yards for Samford University in their 38-6 loss to Georgia Tech.

• Jamael Owens, a McIntosh graduate playing for LaGrange College, rushed for four yards in Lagrange’s 37-0 loss to Rhodes College.

• Hart Pearson, a Fayette County graduate, had four punts for 156 yards with a long of 46 for Charleston Southern University in their 38-35 win over The Citadel.

• Kip Rossi, a Fayette County graduate got some playing time for LaGrange College in their 37-0 loss to Rhodes College.

• Andy Smith, a Starr’s Mill graduate, started at right guard for the University of Memphis in their 33-14 win over Chattanooga.

• Riley Swanson, a Sandy Creek graduate, had two solo tackles, two assists and pass break up for the Wake Forest defense in their 14-13 win over Duke.

• Jake White, a McIntosh graduate got some playing time for LaGrange College in their 37-0 loss to Rhodes College.

There are four local players on the Shorter College football team, Starr’s Mill graduates Ryan Gloer and kenneth James, Sandy Creek graduate demetric McDonald and Our Lady of Mercy graduate Bernard Michel. Statistics from Shorter College’s games are not available on the team’s web site.
