Chamber vows to be more proactive in 2000

“The Fayette County Chamber of Commerce is about to become much more visible and verbal on issues facing our community.”

That's the word from chair-elect of the Fayette Chamber's board of directors Tate Godfrey.

The Chamber board held its annual planning retreat at Brasstown Valley in Young Harris last month and hammered out its goals for the upcoming year.

“The Board of Directors overwhelmingly endorsed a stronger involvement by the Chamber in public and governmental issues. As chairman, it will be my job to make sure the Chamber exercises its influence as the voice of over 750 member businesses in Fayette County,” said Godfrey.

The 1999 retreat established the work plan for the Chamber's 22 standing committees. The board also discussed its priorities for the coming year.

“There were four primary areas that the board wants to emphasize in 2000,” said Darrell Cutts, Fayette County hospital administrator and vice-chair of the Chamber board. “These areas are member services, public relations, member recruitment/retention and governmental affairs.”

Some of the goals the Chamber hopes to attain this year are:

•Become accredited by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

•Evaluate public relations needs and identify solutions either internal or through contact.

•Reach 1000 members by the end of 2000.

•Take a public stance on local issues affecting the Chamber and Fayette County business.
