Devil
Rays win city Fall Junior League By MICHAEL
BOYLAN After losing the season opener, the Peachtree City Devil Rays won nine games in a row and captured the city's 1999 Junior League Fall Ball Championship. The strength of the team was its tight defense led by the infield of Matt D'Alessandro at first base, Joey Corvino at second base, Drew Orton at shortstop, and Jeff Kimbro at third base. The Devil Rays also had to deal with the adversity of losing their starting catcher midway through the season. Chris Hamilton started the season as catcher but broke his hand in the fourth game. Derek Hossbach replaced Hamilton ad did an excellent job behind the plate. It is certainly true in baseball that pitching wins games and Patrick Cheney did an excellent job on the mound for the Devil Rays, recording six wins. The outfield, made up of Scott Long, Jeff Buswell, and Brian Oliver also kept the team in every game, contributing immeasurably to the team's success. Orton, Kimbro and D'Alessandro led the team in hits. The Devil Rays notch another championship into their belts and look forward to exercising their dominance in the coming year. |
