Peter Pan keeps audiences young

By MICHAEL BOYLAN
Weekend Editor

Think of a wonderful thought, any merry, little thought. Once a little fairy dust is added, it is said you can fly.

The freedom of flight and youth are the central themes in J.M. Barrie's classic tale, “Peter Pan”, which is being performed at The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta through Dec. 11.

The Darling siblings, Wendy, John and Michael, meet Peter Pan, a magical boy looking for his shadow. Peter and his fairy friend Tinkerbell take the Darlings to Never Never Land, an island with indians, pirates, tick-tocking crocodiles, mermaids and the Lost Boys. They have many adventures on the island and battle Peter's arch enemy, Captain James Hook, before returning home to the safety of their beds.

Though the story is very well known and there have been several adaptations of it, the magic of Peter Pan continues to enchant it's audience time and again. The Center for Puppetry Arts will use rod puppets in the performance.

In addition to the performance, there is a Create-A-Puppet workshop that ties in with Peter Pan for children ages five and up. For $3.50 ($2.50 for center members), children can create a Crocodile Clock Hand Puppet. The workshops are Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Peter Pan will be performed Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and on Saturdays at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for children ages 2-13, students and senior citizens. Group rates are also available.

If you go to the show, be sure to also check out the exhibits, Puppets: Power of Wonder, focusing on the specific aspect of puppetry in the current performance, Alice on Broadway, Basil Milovsoroff: 21st Century Artist, and Reflections: The Global Representation of Puppetry in Posters. Tickets to the museum and special exhibits are free with the purchase of performance tickets.
