Full weekend of sports to be played this weekend

This weekend promises to be a big weekend for the sports fan. Not only is there a prime time matchup between the Florida Gators and the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday night, but the local high school athletic programs will be rocking too.

Friday night will give football fans some great games to watch. Starr's Mill(2-0) will host Henry County (0-2) at Tiger Stadium at Fayette County High School. Henry County put up some numbers last week against Sandy Creek, but they look vulnerable to the run and Starr's Mill has runs a-plenty.

As for Sandy Creek(2-0), they will host Eagle's Landing (0-2). Coach Rodney Walker was disappointed with his team's intensity last week, meaning it will not be a problem this week. Eagle's Landing has some talent but Sandy Creek is explosive offensively and growing as the season progresses.

Fayette County(1-1) travels to LaGrange(1-1) on Friday night in what should be a very tight game. The Tigers battled Newnan closely until the final five minutes and LaGrange had some trouble in the first week against Troup County. Fayette should not have another lapse like last week and will take the field with something to prove.

East Coweta (0-2) travels to play their crosstown rivals the Newnan Cougars (2-0) on Friday night. The Cougars have not defeated East Coweta in six years and they definitely smell blood this year. The Indians have been injury plagued since the preseason, but with a game against your rivals, all predictions go out the window.

McIntosh(0-2) will travel to play Carver,Columbus(0-2) on Saturday night. The Chiefs will be without quarterback Luke Wiggs who looked solid in the opener against Pebblebrook despite the loss. They will try to find some offense and the defense must be aggressive and look for turnovers.

The Northgate Vikings (0-1) had a bye last week and will travel to face a tough Bowdon (0-1) team on Friday. Northgate is improving week to week and could keep this one close if they play mistake free ball.

There are also some cross country meets this weekend. McIntosh and Starr's Mill will travel to Marist to face several of the top programs in the state. The meet will give the both squads some top notch experience, while allowing them to scout the talents of some of the other top contenders in AAA and AAAA. East Coweta, Sandy Creek,Northgate and Fayette County will travel to the Carrollton Invitational. The meet will serve as an excellent indicator for the talents of the teams.

In softball, Starr's Mill will travel to the North Cobb tournament which began on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers have played very well this season and want to be sharp for their match on Tuesday against their rivals, the Sandy Creek Patriots.

All of this comes in the middle of a Braves pennant race, the Falcons second game of the season, preseason hockey at Phillips Arena on both Saturday and Sunday and lots of college and professional football. Enjoy!
