Library programs keeping all readers cool

By MICHAEL BOYLAN

Summer is the only season that gets attached to the word reading. Nobody says, “Ooh, I can't wait to get to my fall reading.”

Summer reading tends to take one's mind off the heat and that is what the local libraries are hoping for with their “Chill Out With Books” program. The program involves reading clubs for children and adults during the summer.

The children keep track of their reading during the summer, earning prizes for attaining certain levels.

For each reading period of 15 minutes, a square is colored in. The library also keeps track with registration cards, recording general information, prizes received, and total number of hours read. Books read to the child count as if the child has read them. The program runs through July 31 and is open to children 0-16.

Along with the reading club will be special performances from storytellers, magicians, animals and puppets. This Saturday, the Tyrone Public Library will host Sandra Crawley and the presentation “Animalia.” Each library has a schedule of events for the summer.

The first scheduled event at the Fayette County Library, on Heritage Park Way, is Wednesday, June 16 at 2 p.m. The program is called “Music is Magic, Come to the Circus,” with Bruce Bernstein. Bernstein will perform at the Tyrone library on Wednesday as well.

The Tyrone Public Library also will offer the “Thrillin' Chillin' Science Club” and Stamp Camp. Each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., June 23-July 28, Jackie Hall will lead the lab assistants, rising sixth graders or older, through cool (sometimes, literally) experiments, some of which are edible.

Next Wednesday, the topic will be Daring Densities, featuring a triple layer test and swirl painting.

There will also be weekly lab trivia with prizes. Stamp Camp makes its return July 7. Stacie Hall will lead the popular camp until Aug. 8.

If you have questions about any of the programs at any of the libraries, you can stop by and sign up or reach them by phone.
