Now that the kids are out of school and you've piled up lots of vacation hours at work, it's time to start thinking about where to go on your recreational jaunts. If you're interested in a trip that doesn't take you too far away from home, you might choose Callaway Gardens.

Callway Gardens is in Pine Mountain, Ga. and only 30 minutes north of Columbus. There are dozens of recreational possibilities as well as tranquil scenery. This summer, the Florida State "Flying High" Circus will perform its daredevil acrobatic show through Aug. 20. They perform at the Robin Lake Beach Dome everyday but Wednesday.

The Sibley Horticultural Center has a circus-themed topiary display as well as prunifolia azaleas. This type of azalea is exclusive to a 100-mile radius of Callaway Gardens. There are many ways to get closer to nature at the park, including the Day Butterfly Center and dozens of nature trails.

For those who enjoy a faster pace on the trails, there are Discovery bicycle trails. There are miniature train rides and miniature golf courses as well.

Robin Lake Beach is open through Labor Day providing a nice place to fish, swim or paddleboat. For a bit of history, you can also visit the Pioneer Log Cabin.

There will be a special fourth of July celebration at Callway Gardens this year with a fireworks display over Robin Lake Beach in the evening. The Herb Days festival will be Aug. 27-28.

Admission to Callway Gardens is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12. The performance times of the "Flying High" Circus vary.

The group performs at 1:30 and 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, at 8 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, and at 3:30 p.m Tuesdays and Thursdays.
