Make vehicles stop for pedestrians

Earlier this month, a Booth Middle School student was hit by an auto while crossing Peachtree Parkway. Last week, in another area, two girls were struck by a vehicle attempting to avoid colliding with a school bus.

People ask why this happened. Different incidents but similar circumstances: trying to cross the street. The blame was placed on the driver. However, the school board should have considered moving the stopping location after reports of near accident happening.

From my observation, the majority of Georgia drivers will not stop for pedestrians crossing a street, even in crosswalks. I have frequently stopped for pedestrians in crosswalks only to have a speeding driver in the left lane continue on through the crosswalk, narrowly missing the pedestrian.

Failing to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks should be punishable by loss of driving privileges for 90 days. Nothing is more sacred than human life.

A possible solution to this problem is making mandatory driver education a requirement for all initial driving licenses, not only for teenage drivers.
