The controversy surrounding the future of 21st Century Coweta has been quelled, at least for now. The Coweta County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday afternoon to continue funding the industrial recruitment agency through the end of 1999. The funding vote put the cap on a divisive two-month period that had the very future of the organization up in the air. At a meeting earlier in the spring, Commissioner Jim McGuffey suggested the organization fall under the authority of the Coweta County Development Authority and the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce. For two months, the commissioners have wrangled with the issue of funding the organization, and decided to go ahead with funding Tuesday with a few caveats. The board requested a copy of the organization's budget, which was produced, and also demanded that a financial statement and a presentation on the organization's activities be provided to the board on a monthly basis. Commissioner Robert Wood, who also serves on 21st Century Coweta's board, said some changes would be made in the organization. "The process is ongoing to reconfigure the board and restructure the group's funding," he said. Currently, the county supplies $62,500 of the group's annual $250,000 budget. The organization was set up as a joint enterprise between government organizations and private businesses to help lure industrial prospects to the county in order to expand the tax base.
