Heritage Committee brings past to present

By CAROLYN CARY
Contributing Writer

The Fayette Heritage Committee was formed three years ago by former county commissioner Robert Sprayberry, initially to create and build “Heritage Park” in Fayetteville.

The funds came from the sale of county property that housed the former sheriff's building and is now the site of the Holiday Inn Express in Fayetteville.

The park is located on the grounds of the Fayette County Administrative Complex, formerly Stonewall Village. A fountain is the center point, and around it are five circles of bricks. Embedded among the bricks are 65 granite plaques, most of them 15 inches square, with various pieces of Fayette County history. If you walk around reading each one, you will have a synopsis of the county's historical events.

The volunteer committee meets monthly and as its next project will be placing signs in the various communities around the county, depicting both those communities that have vanished as well as those in existence now. The Heritage Committee is also currently exploring ways to create the site of downtown Kenwood as a place to sit down and rest awhile.

The Fayette Heritage Committee consists of David Mundt, Carol Chandler, Pete Frasina, Tony Parrott, Rick Minter, Carolyn Cary, Collin Kelley, Jim George and Angie Stevens.
