Three members of a Peachtree City family have filed a petition for a new trial in the wake of their conviction of misdemeanors in State Court last week.

Kevin and Carolyn O'Keefe were charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer and maintaing a disorderly house, while son Thomas Patrick O'Keefe faced a charge of simple battery. All three received 12 months probation and are prohibited from consuming alcohol during that time.

The four-day trial came after an incident last August, when Peachtree City police investigated a call about a disturbance in the vicinity of the O'Keefe residence.

Lawyer Paul Weiner, representing the O'Keefes, said in his closing argument that police entered the home unnecessarily and improperly, setting off a chain of events that resulted in the arrest of the three defendants.

More than 30 police officers attended the sentencing phase of the trial last Friday morning.

Solicitor General Steven Harris, who prosecuted the case, said that State Court Judge Fletcher Sams will likely hear arguments for a new trial in June. If that is denied, then the O'Keefes have the option to appeal, which could take about a year, Harris said.
