County's big rivalry to hit the diamond

That clawing and scratching you hear is the dogfight between the McIntosh and Fayette County High School. No, it's not between their soccer teams. This time it's between the baseball teams. The Tigers dropped out of first place in their sub-region for a few days and the Chiefs held the glory during that time. Last week, Fayette County lost 10-9 to Lovejoy, after leading by a score of 8-3. Fayette County was missing three starters in the game: David Cooper, Jeff Barnes and Brent Cloud. The injures did not slow their offense down but may have played a part in the Tiger's recording a season high eight errors.

The loss gave the Chiefs possession of first place, until Monday that is. On Monday, Fayette County beat Stockbridge 9-4. The win improved the Tiger's record to 8-4, while McIntosh remains at 7-3. Fayette County will meet non-region opponent Newton County on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a make up game. The Tigers and the Chiefs will meet at McIntosh on Friday at 6 p.m. for their final game of the season. The playoffs will begin on Monday, April 19. A win by Fayette County seals a top seeding in the playoffs and a loss vaults McIntosh to the top by fractions of a point.
