Getting healthy and staying healthy can be a big step. In recognition of National Nutrition Month, Fayette Community Hospital offers ongoing nutrition counseling on numerous subjects, including weight management, cholesterol intake and cardiac care.

Observing healthy dietary guidelines is an important element in reducing health-related problems and many potentially life-threatening diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and obesity. Many simple steps can be taken to improve nutrition levels. FCH offers private nutrition counseling with an on-staff dietition to educate patients about nutrition and to assist each patient with his or her dietary needs.

The predominant problem in many diets is the lack of a variety of nutrient-rich foods. Following are a few suggestions on improving nutrition:

  • Eat regular meals and moderate proportions.
  • Balance food choices over time. If a food group is missed one day, make up for it the next.
  • Reduce, don't eliminate certain foods.
  • Choosing skim or low-fat dairy products and lean cuts of meat such as flank steak and beef round can reduce fat intake significantly.
  • Look through cookbooks to find new and interesting ways to prepare unfamiliar foods.
  • Eat breakfast. For adults, as well as children, balanced breakfast choice can help provide the healthy edge needed for optimum physical performance.
  • When dining out, share meals with a friend, order a smaller portion, or ask for a take-home bag.

To schedule a nutrition consultation, or for more information, please contact Leslie Lanktree, FCH Dietitian, at 770-719-6828.
