U.S. Representative Mac Collins, R-3rd District, recently sponsored the Third Congressional District Student Art Awards and 19 schools responded by sending entries from more than 100 students. Fayette County was represented by the following high schools: Counterpane, Fayette County, McIntosh, Sandy Creek and Starr's Mill. "This was a great afternoon and event," Collins said. "We were all treated to incredible art work by very talented students. Many thanks to the community groups that helped make such a successful event." Judges for the final event were Sally M. Faulkner, founder/director of Southland Auctions, the first fine art auction house in Atlanta, and who has worked on special art projects for John Portman and the Atlanta Olympic Committee; and June Corley, who has worked in advertising in Boston and Atlanta. She received her BFA and Visual Art Design degrees at Auburn University. The top winner Eric Hancock from Newnan High School in Coweta County was awarded $100 and a two-day trip to Washington, D.C., along with a parent and his art teacher. His work will hang in the Congressional Building for one year. Hancock's art teacher is Jodie Hobbs. Second Place went to Fayette County High School student Krystallin Thomas, who will receive $75 and have her painting displayed in Congressman Collins' office in D.C. Her teacher is Melanie Mickleboro. The Fayette Society of Fine Arts Award for Best in Show went to Leigh Margaret Pearson, Fayette County High; the Best School Display Award went to Curt Crocker, also of Fayette County High; and the Henry County Art Club Award went to Jill Weathers of East Coweta High School. Hosts for the event were Collins; the Fayette County Public Library; Gloria Solly, president of the Fayette Society of Fine Arts; Barbara Roark-Frazier, president of the Southern Crescent Alliance of Visual Artists; and the Griffin Tech Foundation. Third Congressional District Art Competition in Full Swing Awards Presentation Scheduled for March 20, 1999 U.S. Representative Mac Collins will make the awards presentation for the 1999 Third Congressional District Art Competition for high school students on Saturday, March 20 at the Fayette County Library in Fayetteville, Georgia at 3:00 PM. The presentation will be made at an awards reception hosted by Collins, the Fayette County Society of Fine Arts, the Southern Crescent Alliance of Visual Arts (SCAVA), and the Fayette County Library. The public is invited to attend and honor these talented young people. Each high school art teacher throughout the Third Congressional District is allowed to submit five of their students' entries for consideration. The entries will be displayed in the Museum from March 20-27. The winning high school entry will be displayed in the United States Capitol for one year. The winner and a guest will be given an all-expense paid, two-day trip to Washington, D.C. for the presentation ceremonies of all first place entries from across the United States on June 22. This year, for the first time, the winner's art teacher will also be awarded the trip to Washington, D.C.
