For the first time, parents of students looking to get in pre-kindergarten class will have to rely on luck this year.

After last year's registration that saw parents get upset over waiting in line for a long time on a Saturday morning, the school system decided to use a lottery system this year.

Parents can register their four-year-olds at the school in their attendance district Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and on April 24 from 8 a.m.-10 a.m.

Twenty names will be drawn for each class. Twins or triplets will be registered and drawn together unless it is for the 20th slot. In this case, if no other slot is available before school begins, the parent or guardian must make a decision concerning the slot, school officials said.

The remaining names will be drawn and placed on a waiting list in the order in which they are drawn. The principal in each school will draw the names in an open meeting area and the instructional lead teacher will record the names and number the register forms in the order in which they are drawn.

Parents will be notified after the April 24 drawing. Each elementary school has one pre-kindergarten class with the exception of Eastside, Newnan Crossing and Moreland, which have two classes.

Students in the State Lottery Pre-kindergarten must be four years of age on or before Sept.1, 1999. A child eligible for kindergarten may not attend the pre-K program.

To attend pre-K, a child must have a Social Security card, a birth certificate, hearing, vision and dental certificate and an immunization certificate. The certificates can be obtained at the Coweta County Health Department.

For more information on the program, call 770-254-2826.
