You're invited to give your opinion on Fayette County's proposed new tax on cell phones to help pay for enhancements to emergency dispatch facilities. During tomorrow's business meeting, county commissioners will have a public hearing onthe proposed $1 per month per phone charge to be added to cellular phone bills. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the County Administrative Complex, 140 Stonewall Ave., Fayetteville. Part of the money will be used to develop technology that will allow county dispatchers to tell where a 911 call is coming from, even if it's on a cell phone. County E911 center director Cheryl Rogers recently told commissioners that many callers can't tell dispatches exactly where they are when they call to report a crime or accident on their cell phones. Some of the money also may be used to make up a shortfall in operating funds for the county's combined dispatch center, commissioners said. Revenues have fallen short of expenses ever since the county took on the task of running emergency dispatch for cities as well as the county. In addition to commenting on the proposed $1 charge, Fayette cell phone customers also might want to check past bills to make sure they haven't already been paying the charge. One caller to The Citizen said his AirTouch cellular bill already had the charge on it. AirTouch spokesmen say they are looking into that situation.
