With Spring practice for football right around the
corner, Sandy Creek had to finalize their decision for who would coach
the Patriots in 1999. And they have. On Monday night, the
Fayette County School Board announced that Rodney Walker would be
the Sandy Creek football coach and continue teaching on a part
time basis.
Coach Walker has an impressive career record of 201 wins,
97 losses and three ties. Last season Coach Walker took the
Peach County Trojans to the state AAA finals. He has many other
accolades attached to his name, he was the coach of the Georgia
High School All-Star team that plays in the Georgia/Florida game
in 1997. He was named the AAA Head Coach and Athletic
Director of the Year in 1997 as well. He has coached at Gilmer
High School, Habersham Central High School and Stephens
County High School, as well as coaching West Rome High School to a
state championship in 1984.
The Patriots are coming off of a 2-8 season, full of
heartbreaking fourth quarter losses. In 1998, Peach County was the only
team to beat Riverdale, an opponent in Sandy Creek's region. The
Trojans beat the raiders in the state semifinals. Coach Walker is
expected to meet the team this week and all parties look forward to
the 1999 season.
