Coach Thorn to address PTC Running Club

By BOB DALTON
Special to The Citizen

Coach Bill Thorn will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Peachtree City Running Club meeting to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday Mar. 1 at the Wyndham Peachtree Executive Conference Center.

As head football coach, head track coach and athletic director at Landmark Christian, Coach Thorn has kept busy over the years. He has compiled an incredible lifetime record of 182 wins, 78 losses and five ties. One of his most ambitious projects was the fund raising for and building of a new track for the students at Landmark. The track had been a longtime dream of Thorn's and was completed in 1997.

His battle cry over his 32 year coaching career has been "Given time, hard work beats talent." Winning one state championship in track ( as his Landmark team did in 1996) is tough enough; winning two (1997) is remarkable; winning three (1998) is phenomenal. Incredibly, he will be going for an unprecedented fourth consecutive state championship this spring.

He was selected to be an Olympic Torchbearer in the 1996 Games here in Atlanta. The Atlanta Track Club selected him later that year as Boys' team Coach of the Year. In 1994, on the occasion of the 25th consecutive running of the Peachtree Road Race, Bill Thorn was inducted into the Peachtree Hall of Fame along with such luminaries as Gayle Barron and Jeff Galloway.

This year will mark another milestone for him when he goes for his 30th consecutive Peachtree Road Race. The public is invited to come and hear this legend share his thoughts on how to be a winner in both athletics and life.
