The Coweta County School System has presented three redistricting plans to the public: Plan A, which affects all middle schools and creates a high school feeder plan; Plan B, which affects only two middle schools, but not creating a feeder plan and plan C, which affects at least three middle schools and all three high schools and working against the feeder plan concept. There are major problems with Plans A and C.

Under Plan A, two middle schools will feed into East Coweta High, two into Newnan and only one, Madras, into Northgate. Superintendent Brooks has stated Northgate will grow to 1,600 students, the same as the other two high schools. As a result, until another middle school is built, Madras will have to have twice the enrollment of each of the other middle schools to provide enough students to maintain Northgate's enrollment.

However, there is another middle school planned. This leads me to the second major problem with Plan A. This plan will only last for two years. When the next middle school is built, the plan will have to be revised and, depending on the exact site of the new school, the boundaries for Madras, Arnall and East Coweta Middle will have to be changed. Once again, hundreds of students will be affected.

Plan C in at least one way is worse than Plan A. Currently, there are two middle schools physically located in East Coweta High's area, two in Newnan's area and one in Northgate's.

If the board approves Plan C, there will be two middle schools in East Coweta High's area, three in Newnan's and none in Northgate's area. Plan C is not a step toward a feeder plan, but a step away from a feeder plan.

I have one final question about Plan C. I know many students from the Moreland area who attend East Coweta High School. Did the residents of the Moreland area ask to be moved from East Coweta into the Newnan district or did the school system come up with that idea on their own?

Plan B is the best choice.
