A number of Peachtree City residents and others have been asked to help the City Council with a "proactive" plan for development of properties at the corner of Walt Banks Road and Ga. Highway 54, said Mayor Bob Lenox.

Lenox told the City Council last week that controversy surrounding a proposal for a large upscale shopping center on some of the properties had generated support for a "unified plan" on how to develop the area. Since rezoning to accommodate "The Mews of Peachtree City" was denied, he added, he felt the city should form a task force to try to insure good uses at the location.

"I think a master plan is an excellent idea," said council member Annie McMenamin. "I've been talking to residents and developers about the corner, maybe revisiting the Land Use Plan over there, or having a master plan."

Council member Robert Brooks commented, "It's an area that already has a lot of different uses commercial, office, two churches, a high school, two kinds of residential."

Some of the persons to whom letters have been sent, who represent both those who supported and those who opposed The Mews, include Chuck Lehman, Jim Strickland, Michael Velsmid, Bob Adams, Julian Campbell (chairman of the Peachtree City Planning Commission), Lt. Col. (Ret.) Cele Eifert, Annie McMenamin, Carol Fritz, Sally Bender, Norm Moore, Dick Cassell, Jim Steinbach, Rick Schlosser and John Callaway (the developer for The Mews).

The first meeting of the Task Force is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, in Room 3 at the Peachtree City Library. Lenox's letters propose that the task force "develop a master plan for this area that will be beneficial for all Peachtree City residents."

The letters continue, "As a Task Force member, you will be asked to review the properties mentioned above (the Lassiter and Heard tracts), as well as the adjoining undeveloped residential properties that will no doubt be brought before the City for consideration at some future date."
