Newnan loses to Douglas in home opener

The Lady Cougars opened the 1999 soccer season with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Douglas County on Tuesday night in Drake Stadium. Newnan started slowly as they fell behind 2-0 at the half. The Lady Cougars picked up the pace and rebounded to tie the score 2-2 on goals from senior Karen Hembree and freshman Sister Edge. Sophomore Amanda Morton assisted on both goals, giving Hembree a one on one breakaway against the Douglas County keeper and crossing the ball, resulting in a goal mouth scramble. The triumph turned tragic though as Newnan let their guard down and Douglas County pulled ahead 3-2 with five and a half minutes remaining. Despite keeping the pressure up and penetrating deep into the Douglas County end, the Lady Cougars could not find the back of the net before the whistle sounded.

All Newnan players found action in the game with the starting eleven as follows: Katie Smith, Crystal Owens, Elizabeth McEntire, Jessica Moore, Summer Carter, Patricia Ballantyne, Anne Barrow (captain), Marci Pike, Amanda Morton, Karen Hembree and Sister Edge. Coming off the bench were Stephanie Flagg, Whitney Mansour and Tiffany Sellen. Karen Rainey did not play due to injury. The result leaves Newnan 0-1-0 heading into their region opener against Stockbridge on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The JV Lady Cougars opened their season at Stockbridge on Thursday.
