The purchase of the land and buildings of Braelinn Baptist Church is one recommendation of the Peachtree City Recreation Commission's master plan for the future, according to Randy Gaddo, leisure services director.

While the plan is not in final form, Gaddo said, the Recreation Commission approved the draft Monday night and will present it to City Council at the city retreat March 19-20. The church purchase, he added, "would fill a lot of needs with one acquisition," so the commission felt the recommendation was a good one.

Braelinn Baptist has announced plans to relocate, probably to the city's west side, and is asking $3 million for its property on Robinson Road at Crosstown Drive. According to church sources, there are other interested buyers as well.

Gaddo commented that funding options for various recommendations in the plan would not be discussed until the plan is finalized after the retreat. Among the uses for the church property could be teen activities, senior citizen services, classrooms for arts and crafts programs or lessons, gymnastics, and "a 600-seat auditorium with professional sound and lighting that could fill the need for a cultural or performing arts center," Gaddo said. There are alternate recommendations for expansion of the various programs even if the church property is not acquired, he noted.

"We've done a lot of homework on this master plan," Gaddo said. "After the retreat, we'll go back with the guidance from the council, make alterations and then present a formal proposal to the council in April or May. The council will vote to adopt the plan and choose the financing methods. As far as the church property is concerned, the timing may be right to do this. To try to build a facility like that from scratch would be very, very expensive."
