After two meetings last week with the Atlanta Regional Commission, Coweta officials are starting to get a feel for the organizational structure of the massive regional development agency. Assistant county administrator Eddie Whitlock attended the meetings and said the county will now have a better idea of some of the regional transportation issues the agency is trying to implement. Coweta officials were invited to the meetings by DOT commissioner Wayne Shackleford since the county is in the 13-county non attainment area for dirty air. The region faces a loss of nearly $1 billion a year in federal funds if the region does not have a plan in place by the end of this year. During the meetings, Whitlock said ARC officials were working on creating the plan and said talks are still in the preliminary stages about the best way to clean up the region's air. In the future, Whitlock plans to attend the transportation meetings and bring a report back to the county commissioners. Additionally, commission chairman Lawrence Nelms is also planning to attend the meetings to make sure the county's interests are included in any plan.
