Contributing Writer The Fayette County Public Library and The Friends of The Fayette County Public Library recently sponsored a brunch as a way of thanking the library's staff and volunteers. Library director Chris Snell told those present that they were "the best" and that their efforts were appreciated more than words could say. Fayette County fire chief Jack Krakeel, representing the county, presented the Librarian of the Year award for 1998 to Beverly Snow. The library's assistant director was honored for her "110 percent effort" last year. Plaques were also given to Joanne Minter for her many hours of volunteer work teaching Spanish classes and to Hendrick Kouwenhoven for his volunteer work teaching Italian classes. Also recognized was Tourgée Simpson, Fayetteville Post Master, for donating 200 hours of his time to the Educational Learning Lab at the library. Evelyn Bost, on behalf of The Friends of the Fayette County Public Library, accepted a plaque and a huge thank-you card signed by all the library employees and staff. Dr. Richard and Judith Moore, along with their daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Moore, donated money to the "Books for Babies Book Bags" and were recognized for their generosity. Mrs. Moore, along with Mrs. Cleopatria Hillary, co-chair the Book Bags program. It will be given to each new mother in the county, encouraging them to not only read to their children, but also to bring them into a library. Ms. Snell also announced that a celebration, entitled "Blended Heritage," is scheduled at the library for Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. It will be an evening of music, poetry and storytelling with Dr. Ferrol Sams Jr., Ms. Snell, Juanita Morris, Dr. David Hobson and Collin Kelley. |
