Every year Coach Hutsell has three goals for his wrestling team: Win the South Metro Invitational, win the area meet and win the state championship. Coach Hutsell and the Chiefs have now completed the first two goals. The Chiefs hosted the 4-AAAA area meet on Saturday and won with an overall score of 211.5 points. The Fayette County Tigers finished in second place with an overall score of 143 points. The Chiefs had six champions and qualified 12 wrestlers for the state meet this weekend.

The Chiefs six champions were

  • Carlos Dinkins at 103
  • Daniel Graham at 112
  • Josh Rickards at 125
  • Eddie Smith at 135
  • Lukas Smith at 189, and
  • Matt Waters at 275.

While pleased that his team won the area meet, Coach Hutsell was disappointed with their level of intensity in the finals. "We were too far ahead, I think," Hutsell said. "They knew they had it won and were kind of lackadaisical."

Fayette County's champion was Jared Bailey at 130. Second place finishers were Brandon Phillips at 119, Brad West at 135, Nick Salters at 145 and Jonathan Bailey at 160. "With the injuries and recent problems we had, I expected to finish in second place," said Coach Jim Bailey." We took 13 guys to the area meet and we're bringing 11 of them to the state meet.

Both teams will work on conditioning and some problem areas that popped up on Saturday, as they prepare to face some of the toughest programs in the state, Friday and Saturday at McEachern.
