A public hearing on a permit for a 99-acre construction landfill near the Fayette-Fulton County line will be held Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. at the South Fulton Service Center, 5700 Stonewall Tell Road, College Park.

The landfill permit application says that "dry" materials will be dumped there, according to Fulton County Senior Planner Beth McMillan. However, opponents of the application are leery that the site, once approved, could "turn into a sanitary landfill," according to Sandra Hardy of Fairburn. The site is located on the west side of U.S. Highway 29 about two miles south of the Fairburn business district.

The applicant is Ronald Slack of a Gwinnett company called Safeguard Inc. The company has sought to establish the landfill since 1990, over the objections of Fulton residents and elected officials, Hardy said, and a lawsuit has now opened the way for a permit process.
