Paddlers take on Cartecay

The Peachtree City Paddlers will be celebrating New Year's on the river. The annual tradition includes joining the Georgia Canoe Association on the Cartecay River for a day of paddling and eating chili.

The Cartecay River in Ellijay is a Class II-III, so some paddling experience is necessary. Also, cold weather paddle clothing is recommended.

After paddling the river, everyone meets at Mountain Outdoor to warm up with shared chili. Your chili can be entered into the annual contest for prizes and recognition.

According to members of the Peachtree City Paddlers, paddling on the first day of the new year ensures good paddling for all of 1999. For more information on the trip, call Brenda Carlton, 770-631-0605.

The group has scheduled roll practices at Kedron Aquatics Center Jan. 10 and Jan. 24. Participants should bring a clean boat to the pool and arrive about 5:15 p.m. The "bubble" door will be opened about 5:25 p.m. and all paddlers should be ready to enter the pool at the same time. Practice runs until 7:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per person or $6 per family. Call Margo Booth for details, 770-487-8084.
