Matt Long of Tyrone has been nominated to the United States Air Force Academy by U.S. Sen. Paul Coverdell (R-GA). Long, a senior at Sandy Creek High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Long.

"Matt has demonstrated the intellectual ability needed to succeed academically and the character necessary to be an outstanding officer in our armed forces," said Coverdell. "We should all be very proud of what he embodies for the future of our state and our country."

Lisa Hammett of Fayetteville, a pre-pharmacy student at Gordon College, has been accepted into the Mercer University Doctorate of Pharmacy program. Hammett, married and the mother of a 3-year-old, works at CVS. She will begin classes at Mercer next fall and will have four years of classes and internships before graduating from Pharmacy School.

Lt. Christopher A. Stansell with the Fayette County Fire Department has completed a 120-hour course in Supervision conducted by the General Instruction Division of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth.

Training objectives seek to develop and enhance the knowledge, skill and ability of supervisors. Students who complete this course meet the training requirements for Supervisory Certification by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.

The United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta's Fayette County Advisory Board recently recognized the following volunteers for their work in the community:

Amy Nix, Fayette County Dept. of Fire and Emergency Services; recognized for her work as a firefighter and trainer; September Volunteer of the Month.

Edwina Griffin, Fayette Thrift Shop Inc.; nominated for her work as treasurer; October Volunteer of the Month.

Claire Barge, American Cancer Society; nominated for her performance of clerical duties in the ACS office; November Volunteer of the Month.

Nancy Blair, a parent volunteer with the Fayette County School System; recognized as Volunteer of the Month for December.

Carrie Walker, a senior education major at Wesleyan College, has been named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Walker, a graduate of McIntosh High School, received the 1998 Emma Louise Anderson and James Ernest Bledsoe Scholarship and was a 1998 dean's list scholar.

She is the daughter of James and Pamela Walker of Peachtree City.

Michael Desmond, son of Leslie and David Dukes of Peachtree City, recently completed the 10-week Georgia Law Enforcement Training Course in Tifton. Desmond, a 1994 graduate of McIntosh High School, is an officer with the Valdosta Police Department. He has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Valdosta State University.
