A public hearing on adoption of housing codes that apply to older homes or aging buildings in Peachtree City is scheduled for the Dec. 14 meeting of the city's planning commission. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The city's planners, building officials and code enforcement personnel have asked that Peachtree City adopt Southern Standard Building Codes which deal with maintenance, repairs and renovations of older homes. At present, according to development services director Jim Williams, standards for upkeep of older homes are taken from building codes that were written to cover construction of new homes. Concern has been expressed at one homeowner association meetings that the codes, approved by the state of Georgia for use in cities, may contain sweeping powers of entry and search of private homes. Other concerns raised include square footage requirements for bedrooms, which might dictate to parents how many children can occupy a bedroom. Betsy Tyler, city spokesperson, says that the planning commission meeting Monday is its second public hearing on the codes. The city council also would hold public hearings prior to considering ordinances to adopt the codes and to set up a board of appeals, she said. Also scheduled are public hearings on two rezonings. Callaway Land Development is seeking to rezone 52.763 acres at Ga. Highway 54 and Walt Banks Road to a "limited use commercial" classification to allow construction of "The Mews at Peachtree City." The development has been described as a location for "exclusive" shops, restaurants and entertainment facilities designed to provide a "town square" feeling. The other rezoning would change the residential classification of the 10.6-acre Lallande tract at 2041 Hwy. 54 East. Also on the agenda are a conceptual site plan for the Panasonic expansion and a landscape plan for Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church at Hwy. 54 and Peachtree Parkway.
