Andrew James Cieslak, son of James and Carolyn Cieslak of Peachtree City, has been initiated into Beta Theta Pi by the chapter at Emory University.

Justin Belill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Belill of Peachtree City, has been accepted as a member of the 1999 Spirit of America National Honor Band for its 22nd annual Performing Tour of Europe. He was chosen on the basis of maturity, performance and the ability to represent the best of American youth. He will be raising a major portion of his expenses himself; anyone interested in helping or sponsoring him can call 770-486-6593.

Belill is a member of the McIntosh High School Band, directed by Jennifer Hamilton. He plays trumpet in the marching band, wind ensemble and jazz band.

Leslie Rice of Peachtree City has been nominated for a Fulbright Scholarship, which would provide her with an opportunity to study in Europe next year. Rice, a senior Theology student, is among eight students from the University of Dallas nominated for the prestigious scholarship. Final interviews are set for this month.

Herman Whitehead, a chemistry and physical science teacher at Sandy Creek High School, attended the National Science Teachers Association's Southern Area Convention recently at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center. More than 2,500 educators gathered information on the latest and most innovative teaching methods and explored new developments in science. They participated in hands-on workshops, sessions and short courses, and heard from nationally known speakers.

Michael Desmond, son of Leslie and David Dukes of Peachtree City, recently completed the 10-week Georgia Law Enforcement Training Course in Tifton. Dukes, a 1994 graduate of McIntosh High School, is an officer with the Valdosta Police Department. He has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Valdosta State University.
