The East Coweta boys and girls basketball teams are off to a good start. Both teams went 2-1 in the Morrow-Arrowhead Clinic Thanksgiving Tournament, with the boys making it to the championship game against Lovejoy.

The boys opened up the tournament with wins over Morrow and Forest Park. Justin Stephens led the team in scoring and was named to the all-tournament team while Eric Harris was the leading rebounder and recorded two double-doubles. The Indians lost to Lovejoy 78-61 in the championship game.

"The guys are playing together and moving the ball well," Coach Thrower said. "They must improve their play in the post and play more aggressive defensively though. They also need to be patient with their shot selection."

East Coweta started working right away. The Indians opened the regular season against Eagle's Landing and beat them soundly by a score of 71-33. Justin Stephens recorded 17 points in the win and Xavier Darden scored 10. The Indians shot extremely well early and built a big lead. Eagle's Landing is a young AAA school that graduated several of their top players from last season.

The Lady Indians lost to Crim in the opening round of the tournament by a score of 61-53 and then beat Forest Park and Sandy Creek , 63-50 and 77-53 respectively. Trishica Evans recorded 35 points in the final two games of the tournament as the team began to gel together and play better with each other.

In their game against Eagle's Landing on Tuesday, Susie Shellnutt started and made three crucial baskets, recording six points. Trishica Evans scored 18 points and had a number of steals and rebounds, as the Lady Indians went on to win by a score of 64-55. Coach Paula Jones turned up the defensive pressure in the second half forcing Eagle's Landing to turn the ball over and help the Lady Indians produce some much needed baskets. East Coweta travels to Fayette County on Friday night to face the Tigers. The girls game begins at 7 p.m.
