Bike club is off to good start

Letters from Our Readers

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

We have been successful in starting our bicycle club. Our goal is to accommodate the needs of all who are interested in improving their health, biking skills and riding conditions in Fayette County.

We have been striving to allow all members to have input into the direction of our new organization. We want to work toward a friendly, positive atmosphere at our meetings and our rides. We want to hear more views and ideas from all individuals attending the meetings. Remember, this is your club and we want you to have input. To maintain one-hour meetings we have to work with some formality, including an agenda.

As it will be indicated in our by-lays, our meetings are and will be operated under the standards of Robert's Rules of Order. A good general rule of thumb for parliamentary procedure is, "The majority rules and the minority has the right to be heard."

One way to make a desire known is by making a motion. We would enjoy hearing motions from the floor; i.e., "I move we do thus and so." We want to operate our group as a democracy where everyone has a voice in the process.

By using these sometimes elementary procedures, we will preclude dominance by any individuals. If we will practice good parliamentary procedure during low-key situations, it will help us during times when everyone is not in total agreement, and the final decision will be perceived as a fair one.

Fayette Biking for Life is dedicated to supporting each other and working toward seeing cyclists as an accepted and welcomed part of the county and city scene, attempting to gain respect from motorists by following the same rules they do, and most importantly, improving riding conditions in Fayette County and promoting the good health and physical fitness of its members.

If you have any questions, please call me at 770-461-1880.
