Solution to gangs in Fayette: Get ROTC back in schools

Letters from Our Readers

Why don't the Fayette high schools each have an ROTC program?

If gangs are recruiting in Fayette County and kids are eager to join, why not offer them a positive alternative? The ROTC program offers leadership training, group identification, personal growth, and extracurricular activities.

Just like street gangs, the ROTC recognizes individual and group effort with awards, leadership positions, and promotions. More importantly, the ROTC teaches life skills that translate well in the legitimate job market and parents can be proud of the child who joins this organization.

The time to start an ROTC program at Starrs Mill, Sandy Creek, McIntosh, and Fayette High schools is now, before another one of this county's children joins the wrong kind of gang.

The Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines all have ROTC programs. I would be proud to have any of my children join any one of them. If you feel likewise, call your principal and ask for an ROTC program on your high school campus. They need to hear from you.
