Tamela Tew Ragsdale of Fayetteville has reached the semifinals in a national poetry contest sponsored by The Poetry Guild. The Guild chooses poems for publication that exhibit considerable merit and offers a grand prize of $1,000 per poetry contest. Ragsdale's poem, "Hiding Place," has been published in The Poetry Guild's latest anthology, "Thoughts & Dreams Remembered."

Ragsdale said she prefers to write based on inspirations and has been writing poetry for 14 years. Other hobbies include photography, motorcycles and running.

Identification technician and Deputy Sheriff Leonardo Candelaria with the Fayette County Sheriff's Department has completed a basic photography course taught by the General Instruction Division of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth.

This course is designed to offer public safety officers, investigators and technicians fundamental photographic skills and includes lectures, photographic projects, and darkroom processing and printing of film.
