Military BriefsNavy Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeffery M. Meyers, a 1988 graduate of McIntosh High School, is currently halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf aboard the attack submarine USS Newport News, home ported in Norfolk, Va. While deployed, Meyers' ship participated in Exercise Shark Hunt, an undersea warfare event held off the coast of Spain to train units in countering diesel submarines operating in a shallow water environment. During the deployment, Meyers had the opportunity to visit Greece, Israel, Italy and Spain. He joined the Navy in July 1988. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class William E. Turner, son of Derrell M. Turner of Fayetteville, is among the crewmembers aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp, home ported at Norfolk, Va., who recently earned honors as the winner of the 1999 Capt. Edward F. Ney Memorial Award, for food service excellence in the large afloat category. Turner, along with other members of the crew, earned the award for the ship's enhanced readiness and superb galleys and general messes. Cadet 2nd Class Brandon G. Williams, son of Gene and Hazel Williams of Fayette County, has merited appointment on the U.S. Air Force Academy Superintendent's List for the 1998 spring semester. Williams, a 1996 graduate of Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, earned the honor by obtaining a grade point average, military performance average and a physical education average of 3.0. Williams now earns the honor of wearing the Superintendent's Pin, awarded to and worn only by those cadets who are on all three of the academy's merit lists the Dean's, Commandant's and Athletics' Lists. Williams plans on going to undergraduate pilot training following graduation in May 2000. |
