By MICHAEL BOYLAN Sports Editor Tigers captured by their tails Team: Fayette County Tigers Coach: Clint Burton Record: 4-3 Last Week: lost to East Coweta, 54-14 Key Players: QB Gerald Johnson threw for two touchdowns and WRs Jimmy Canning and Brandon Croft made some big catches on fourth downs to keep drives alive. Notes: Ouch! The Indians defense swarmed and feasted on the Tigers, not allowing a touchdown until the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. QB Gerald Johnson and the offense showed flashes of brilliance but could never cap their drives with a touchdown until late in the game. The Tigers were also hampered by RB Wes Clark's ankle injury. He played but was definitely not the force he has been in previous weeks. This week: at Upson-Lee
Chiefs out duel the Knights Team: McIntosh Chiefs Coach: Clint Ashmore Record: 2-5 Last Week: beat Upson-Lee, 13-7 Key Players: Dion Stokes, 191 yards on 30 carries, one touchdown. LB Nate Wesley, a huge interception returned 40 yards. LB Tony Franks, fumble recovery, WR DJ Dunlap, a catch for a touchdown. Notes: The defense was the strength once again for the Chiefs but it wasn't their only weapon. They pounded it out with Upson-Lee and were tied 7-7 in the fourth quarter. The turnovers that the Chiefs produced were key as Wesley's interception stopped a strong Upson-Lee drive. The Chiefs won on defense, holding Upson-Lee to 213 yards and Upson-Lee hurt themselves by amassing 110 yards in penalties. This week: at Griffin
Indians play Homecoming wrecker Team: East Coweta Coach: Danny Cronic Record: 7-0 Last week: beat Fayette County, 54-14 Key players: Dantra Clements, 191 yards rushing, three touchdowns. Marvin Smith, three touchdowns. Mondez Godfrey played outstanding on offense and defense. Notes: Dantra ! Dantra ! You have to see it to believe it. Clements had three huge runs, 64 yards, 43 yards and one close to 50 yards, against the Tigers. He jukes likes a pro and was easily the fastest player on the field Friday night. The defense was excellent for the Indians limiting the Tigers to 14 points and knocking some players out of their socks a few times. This Week: vs LaGrange
Sandy Creek outplayed by Greyhounds Team Sandy Creek Patriots Football Continued From Page 3B
Coach: Don Tyre Record: 2-4 Last week: lost to Jones County, 27-6 Key Players: Thomas Owen, eight tackles and five assists, Dusty Peppers, seven tackles and one assist. Mark Lawson, 113 yards on 13 carries Notes: The Patriots did not play well defensively, allowing 14 points in the fourth quarter. Jones County played an intimidation game and the Patriots did not react well. The offensive line did not protect the passer very well either, allowing nine tackles behind the line of scrimmage. This week: vs Woodward Academy
Panthers bitten by Bulldogs Team: Starr's Mill Panthers Coach: Mike Earwood Record: 2-4 Last week: lost to Mt.Zion, Jonesboro, 27-3 Key Players: DE Clint Barbour, QB Brad McClaren, RB Ladon Cooper Notes: Sometimes a bye week is a bad thing. While your team gets a chance to heal, their rhythms can get out of whack. That is not necessarily the reason for the Panthers loss but it factors in to it. The Panthers are obviously missing their offensive star, Craig Maddock, who is out for the rest of the season. The defense was as strong as it could be but overmatched by a top ranked and seasoned Mt.Zion team. This week: vs Jones County
Landmark loses in OT Team: Landmark Christian War Eagles Coach: Bill Thorn Record: 4-3 Last week: lost to Bremen, 34-28 Key Players: QB C.R.Palmer was impressive running the option and Rasaan Davis played well again. Notes: The game was tied 28-28 at the end of regulation and it went to two five minute periods of overtime. Bremen scored and has made the road to the playoffs very difficult for the War Eagles. This week: vs Temple
Northgate still has growing pains Team: Northgate Vikings Coach: Ron Beaucham Record: 0-6 Last week: lost to Tri-County, 42-11 Key Players: LB Adam Bass, six tackles and two assists, LB Maurice Huffman, seven tackles, six assists and a tackle producing a ten yard loss. Michael Kane played well offensively Notes: The Vikings are still making freshmen and sophomore mistakes, according to Coach Beaucham. Northgate is developing defensively though and the members of their young team are getting valuable experience and playing time. This week: vs Bremen By MICHAEL BOYLAN |
