If it's the middle of October, Coweta County Tax Commissioner Tommy Ferrell knows his phone will start ringing. With property tax bills being mailed out to over 40,000 Coweta property owners this week, Ferrell said the phones have started their autumnal tradition of ringing of the hook. Many residents are calling the commissioner with questions about their bills, while others are venting over amount of the bill. While the millage rate dropped this year for both the incorporated and unincorporated county, Ferrell said many residents had an increase on their bill because their property was reassessed this year. Nearly 10,000 parcels were reassessed this year and Ferrell said many residents are calling and questioning the increase in the bill. The tax commissioner added that the calls usually level off by the beginning of November, but usually pick up shortly before the payment deadline of Dec. 11. This year's millage rate in the unincorporated county dropped to 28.51 from 28.67 last year, while the incorporated county's rate dropped from 27.24 to 27.05. While it's too late to appeal any reassessment issued by the tax assessor's office, Ferrell said he would be glad to answer any taxpayer's questions and explain how the bill is computed.
