Club sees cycling as solution

A new bicycle club is forming in Fayette County. "Biking For Life in Fayette County" will have their first meeting Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Fayette County Recreation Department on Redwine Rd. in Fayetteville.

Carleton Williams, in cooperation with Anita Godbee, program supervisor for the recreation department, is helping to form the club. Williams said the schedule for the first meeting will include a short business meeting, refreshments and a ride.

"Remember, it is a state law that children under age 16 must wear a helmet when riding a bike," Williams said. "You must wear a helmet to participate in any rides sponsored by the club."

Williams and Godbee also advocate use of a popular bumper sticker which encourages car drivers and bike riders to "Share the Road." The sticker is designed to "create a friendly atmosphere where cyclists are an accepted and welcome part of the county scene," Williams said.

"Encourage citizens and officials to see cycling as a great solution to traffic congestion and sir pollution" he added. "Let's gain the motorists' respect for cyclists who follow the same rules of the road."
