Fayette County is increasing your choices of places to do it.

The county recently completed a new trail that winds through 33 heavily wooded acres behind the senior center at 390 Lee St., Fayetteville, plus a system of trails at McCurry Park.

A new county judicial complex eventually will occupy the senior center trail area, but county commissioners recently approved building the trail for use by residents in the interim.

To take a hike, park at the senior center and find the trail behind the building.

But county manager Billy Beckett suggests waiting until the weather is cool. He ran into quite a few ticks when scouting the woods for a trail route recently, he said.

Trails and new playground equipment at McCurry Park will provide hiking space for devoted walkers and a diversion for those visiting the park for soccer or softball, Beckett said.

Trails at the county's new Lake Horton have been sketched by county consultants Mallett and Associates, and work will start soon, said Beckett.

"But the nicest trail we're going to have," Beckett told commissioners recently, "with wetlands, hardwoods and forest area, is in the landfill buffer."

The county is in the process of closing the First Manassas Mile Road landfill, and more than 200 acres along Whitewater Creek just off Ga. Highway 54 west have been set aside as a permanent buffer between the landfill and surrounding homes and businesses.

"We want to take our time to be sure the wetlands are handled properly," Beckett said, adding that officials hope to have a design complete by November and trails ready for use by next spring.

"We hope the public will take advantage of these trails," Beckett said.
