Dr. David Campbell, pastor of Inman United Methodist Church, held an unusual service this morning. It was held outdoors on the site of the original church, Liberty Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, South, first erected in 1849.

The occasion was the Second Annual Inman Heritage Days and the story of community's heritage cannot be told without including the Inman Methodist Church.

It has long been active in the lives of the local citizens. An official deed can be found in 1832 and in 1849 a second deed was registered, locating the church near an established community cemetery.

The current brick building was built in 1966 and an expansion is currently being drawn up. The church has witnessed three ordained ministers coming from its congregation, the Rev. Dan Overstreet, Dr. Don Harp and the Rev. Gary Parrish.

Dr. David Campbell came to the church in 1993. He was born and reared in East Point. He was graduated from Briarwood High School and attended Georgia State University, graduating in 1986 with a degree in music.

He was 15 years old and singing in his church choir when he intently listened to the minister and decided "I would like to do that."

In 1988 he received his Master of Divinity at Emory Theological University and obtained his Doctorate of Ministry at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio in 1994.

He and wife Susan, who has a degree in voice and is the church music director, have two children, Hannah, 5, Jay, 3 and another one is expected next January.

He sees as his personal goal the increase of pre-school, the need to build more Sunday School rooms and a fellowship hall. Attendance is up 25 percent since his arrival and he concludes, "this is a great place to be."

The church is located at 153 Hills Bridge Road, Inman. Services are held Sunday Morning at 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. and a church supper is held each Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

The church office can be reached at 770-461-2123.

Portions of the church history were taken from History of the Inman Church by S. J. Overstreet.
