Pet adoption
addresses shelter overpopulation
As many as 27 million cats and dogs are received by animal
shelters each year in the United States. Because these shelters are so
overburdened, 80 percent of the cats and two-thirds of the dogs
are euthanized. To help address this problem and increase the
number of pet adoptions, PetSmart is hosting a Pet Adopt-A-Thon Sept.
19 (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and Sept. 20 (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at the
Fayette Pavilion store.
The Fayetteville store will provide space for a Luv-A-Pet
Adoption Center, where the Fayette County Humane Society will
display adoptable pets for prospective parents.
Most humane organizations recommend that people
considering the addition of a pet to their household introduce all
family members and existing pets to a new animal before adopting it.
A prompt veterinary examination is also recommended. All
pets adopted through Luv-A-Pet Adoption Centers are eligible
for a free initial exam at any PetSmart veterinary clinic.
